libertarianism, libertarians

2016 Presidential election Does it make sense to vote for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for president? Sure, as long as you believe two things. First, you have to believe that it makes no difference at all whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump moves into the White House – because one of them will. Second, you have to believe that America will be better off in the long run in we eliminate environmental regulation, abolish the income tax, do away with public schools, and dismantle Social Security and Medicare – which is what the Libertarian platform calls for. Government Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather. John Perry Barlow, “A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace” © 2017 Kwiple.com
Libertarians American libertarians should rarely be taken at face value. They generally share two characteristics. The first is that they are rich. It is as rare to find an impoverished libertarian as it is to find a wealthy socialist. The second reason is that their libertarianism rarely stretches beyond their personal freedoms, especially the liberty not to be taxed. Other people's freedom is their own lookout.
