Abortion During slavery, a lot of the slaveowners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave. Ben Carson, comparing women who have abortions to slaveowners © 2015 Kwiple.com
Authoritarianism The slave licenses the master. More than that: the slave likes or perhaps even loves the master. The dynamic is one in which the prey prevaricates and then yields to the predator. Despotism is a form of power that transforms subjects into willing instruments of rulers. Subjects are the proximate cause of their own subjection. Servitude is chosen. People do not lose their liberty; rather, they win their enslavement. John Keane, The New Despotism © 2022 Kwiple.com

Civil wars I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how the government was gonna run, the freedoms of what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was? Dead-in-the-heads say There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great- grandsons, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land. History In this paper, we show that the local prevalence of slavery — an institution that was abolished 150 years ago — has a detectable effect on present-day political attitudes in the American South. … That is, the larger the number of slaves  per capita in his or her county of residence in 1860, the greater the probability that a white Southerner today will identify as a Republican, oppose affirmative action, and express attitudes indicating some level of “racial resentment.” Avidit Acharya, Matthew Blackwell, Maya Sen, The Political Legacy of American Slavery [2016] © 2021 Kwiple.com
Political inequality Unequal representation in the Senate has unquestionably failed to protect the fundamental interests of the least  privileged minorities. On the contrary, unequal representation has sometimes served to protect the interests of the most  privileged minorities. An obvious case is the protection of the rights of slaveholders rather than the rights of their slaves. Robert A. Dahl, How Democratic Is the American Constitution?  © 2018 Kwiple.com
Public discourse Right or wrong, or even if I changed my mind about it or thought about it more, which I'm not saying I did, just place the thought out there that everyone's not thinking sometimes. Galileo, they wanted to chop his head off for saying that the earth was – what did he say? That the sun revolved around the earth, and vice versa. Kanye West, commenting on his claim that slavery was a choice  © 2018 Kwiple.com
Reparations Haiti had to take out a loan in 1825 in order to compensate the French colonists [from whom they had. won independence in 1804]. The exorbitant interest from the debt meant it was not paid off until 1947, resulting in impoverished Haitians paying out more than twice the value of the colonists's claims. A formerly enslaved people forced to compensate those who had enslaved them: a devastating irony. Zeinab Badawi, Financial Times, July 28, 2021 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Reparations In 1833, following slavery’s abolition, the British government took out a loan of £20m to compensate slave owners. Its final payment was made in 2015. Zeinab Badawi, Financial Times, July 28, 2021 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Schools The South gave the Negro the best education fitted for the life he was to iive. He was trained to the school of discipline and self-control … He was taught to do every necessary thing and to do it well … Where can you find a more varied and valuable education? Slavery America freed the slaves in 1863 through the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln,  but gave the slaves no land, and nothing in reality, as a matter of fact, to get started on. At the same time, America was giving away millions of acres of land in the West and the Midwest, which meant that there was a willingness to give the white peasants from  Europe an economic base. And yet, it refused to  give its black peasants from Africa, who came here involantarily in chains, and had worked free for 244 years, any kind of economic base. And so, emancipation for the Negro was really freedom to hunger. It was freedom to the winds and rains of heaven. It was freedom without food to eat or land to cultivate, and therefore it was freedom and famine at the same time. Martin Luther King, Jr. © 2023 Kwiple.com

Slavery [Gale] Norton [George W. Bush's Secretary of the Interior] describes slavery as a “bad fact,” legal parlance for an irrelevancy that inconveniently muddies the judicial waters, like smog on a day when a corporate polluter is defending itself in court. Slavery I think it was great at the time when families were united – even though we had slavery – they cared for one another.  Roy Moore, when asked when he thought the last time America was great  © 2017 Kwiple.com
Slavery  Slavery didn't end in 1865. It just evolved. It turned into decades of terrorism, violence and lynching. Bryan Stevenson, 2017 Tanner Lecture on Human Values, Harvard Univrsity, December 7, 2017 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Slavery  Slavery has always been a global problem. Americans sometimes refer to it as their country's “original sin”. Europeans look back in horror at the way their ancestors plundered entire continents for riches. But implicit in both cases is the false idea that slavery is a legacy of the past. In fact, not only are the effects of historical slavery still felt today, there are also more people living in slavery now than at any time in history. Slavery Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot. While the legislatures of the south retain the right to pass laws making any discrimination between black and white, slavery still lives there. Slavery The true evil of American slavery wasn’t involuntary servitude. It was the narrative of racial difference, the ideology of white supremacy that we made up to justify slavery. That’s the true evil. Bryan Stevenson, 2017 Tanner Lecture on Human Values, Harvard Univrsity, December 7, 2017 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Slavery What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. Frederick Douglass, July 5, 1852 © 2020 Kwiple.com
Sleepers at the wheel say Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. Ben Carson © 2015 Kwiple.com
Social mobility When white Americans tell the Negro to lift himself by his own bootstraps, they don't look at the legacy of slavery and segregation. I believe we ought to do all we can, and seek to lift ourselves by our own bootstraps, but it's a cruel gesture to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps. And many Negroes, by the thousands and millions, have been left bootless as a result of all these years of oppression and as a result of a society that deliberately made his color a stigma and something worthless and degrading.
