Anti-Semitism That's not life for men and women, insult and hatred. Leopold Bloom, in the “Cyclops” episode in James Joyce's Ulysses  © 2022 Kwiple.com
Books Most titles nowadays are chosen for search engine optimisation. If War and Peace  appeared today, someone at the publishers might insist on renaming it Dating Hot Russian Women. Simon Kuper, Financial Times, September 9, 2021 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Books So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war! Abraham Lincoln, on meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin © 2021 Kwiple.com
Citizenship Citizenship is an office, and that office has duties. The duties include being informed about what is going on around you, and what is stopping Americans from knowing what is going on around them is the cascade, the torrent, the Nile River of dark money that has begun to flow into our democracy since Citizens United. Sheldon Whitehouse, January 19, 2022 © 2022 Kwiple.com
Citizenship Sitting at the table doesn’t make you a diner, unless you eat some of what’s on that plate. Being here in America doesn't make you an American. Being born here in America doesn't make you an American. Why, if birth made you American, you wouldn't need any legislation; you wouldn't need any amendments to the Constitution; you wouldn't be faced with civil-rights filibustering Washington, D.C., right now. Malcolm X, speech in Cleveland, Ohio, April 3, 1964 © 2021 Kwiple.com
Death More than 1m people around the world die each year from infections linked to microbes resistant to antibiotics, according to a study that estimates the scale of a "silent pandemic" that is now more deadly than malaria or HIV. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been described by experts as one of the greatest  threats to public health in the 21st century. The figures underscore the dangers of bacteria developing resistance to existing antibiotics as a result of overuse — including during the Covid-19 pandemic — against a backdrop of scant new vaccines and drugs under development to prevent or treat infections. Democracy When in a democracy, one group of citizens can deliberately, purposefully make it more difficult for another group of citizens to vote, they have put a dagger into that democracy. We cannot let that happen. Sheldon Whitehouse, January 19, 2022 © 2022 Kwiple.com
Drugs I think the biggest killer out there is stigma. Stigma keeps people in the shadows.  Stigma keeps people from coming forward and asking for help. Jerome Adams © 2022 Kwiple.com
Equality If you have a dog, I must have a dog. If you have a rifle, I must have a rifle. If you have a club, I must have a club. This is equality. Malcolm X © 2021 Kwiple.com
Fascism Let me tell you the whole truth: if ever Fascism should come to America, it will come in the name of “freedom.” Thomas Mann © 2022 Kwiple.com
Filibusters In practical terms, it essentially means that a simple majority of 51 votes isn't nearly enough to pass legislation. If you don't get 60 votes for a bill, it's dead. Which means, theoretically, senators from the 21 least populated states representing just 11% of Americans could overrule everyone. It seems pretty extreme. So, to quote everyone who's ever sat in a bathroom stall with a 3" gap in the door — why on earth was it designed this way? John Oliver, Last Weeek Tonight, September 8, 2019 © 2022 Kwiple.com
Kwiplers say Count votes in Congress by: 1. Calculating a Member's Proportional Vote (MPV) for each member, as follows: MPV = SPNP / NLRS where: SPNP = State's Percentage of the National Population NLRS = Number of Legislators Representing the State (in that legislature) 2. Totaling “yes” MPVs and “no” MPVs 3. Passing if total MPV is more than 50 OTHERWISE Abolish the Senate © 2019 Kwiple.com
Liars say THE UNITED STATES SENATE HAS ══════════════ NEVER ══════════════ BEEN ABLE TO END DEBATE WITH A SIMPLE MAJORITY Poster displayed by Joe Manchin as he announced he's siding with all Republican senators to preverve the anti-democratic requirement for 60 votes to end a filibuster, rather than preserve voting rights for millions of Americans by lowering it to 51, something that's often been done in the past, as when his was the 51st vote that put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court  © 2022 Kwiple.com
Money in politics My warning, if you will, to corporate America is to stay out if politics. I'm not talking about political contributions. Mitch McConnell © 2022 Kwiple.com
Post-2020 Senate shituation 15 states (Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming) 2020 population: 40,085,414 Senators: 30 Republicans 1 Senator per 1,336,180 people 1 state (California) 2020 population: 39,368,075 Senators: 2 Democrats 1 Senator per 19,684,037 people 19,684,037 / 1,336,180 = 14.7, therefore: average 15er's vote is worth nearly 15 times a Californian's, a Californian's vote is worth less than 7% of an average 15er's 1 state (Wyoming) 2020 population = 582,328, therefore: 1 Senator per 291,164 Wyomians, a Wyomian's vote is worth 68 times a Californian's, a Californian's vote is worth 1.5% of a Wyomian's  © 2021 Kwiple.com
Power Darkness is good. … Dick Cheney, Darth Vader, Satan. That's power. Steve Bannon © 2022 Kwiple.com
Public discourse They say, “I'm going to protect you from the terrorists in Tehran and the homos in Hollywood.” We say, “We're for clean air, better schools, more health care.” James Carville, Democratic political consultant, comparing Republicans to Democrats © 2022 Kwiple.com
Public discourse You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose. Mario Cuomo © 2021 Kwiple.com
Punt returners say Yes, I agree. Except to use your metaphor, I don't think it's the last inning. I think it's the last pitch. David Rothkopf responding to Lawrence O'Donnell, who, while interviewing him on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell on January 24, 2022, said: “There is another problem with Washington news media coverage, which is, if they were baseball reporters, the way they would cover the game is the winner is whoever won the last inning. So everything Joe Biden did in the first, second, third, fourth innings of year one is forgotten when Build Back Better runs into the roadblock in the Senate and then voting rights runs into the filibuster roadblock in the Senate.” © 2022 Kwiple.com
Racists say The concern is misplaced, because if you look at the statistics, African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans. Mitch McConnell, January 19, 2022, wrong both factually, especially when rates of voting among blacks are compared to rates among whites, and for denying that voting laws recently passed by Republican state legislatures were neither intended to nor will they have the effect of suppresing voting by minorities  © 2022 Kwiple.com
Religion The intentions in France and the United States seem similar, but they are not the same. The United States, in guaranteeing freedom of religion, sought to shield religion from state involvement. France, in guaranteeing freedom of religion, sought to shield the state from religious involvement. This distinction has consequences. Rachel Donadio, The Atlantic, December 2021 © 2022 Kwiple.com
Selfie After all, Darth Vader is one of the nicer things I've been called recently. Dick Cheney, 2007 © 2022 Kwiple.com
Sex If you need Viagra, you're probably with the wrong woman. Donald Trump © 2022 Kwiple.com
Supreme Court To state the obvious, judges do not know what scientists and public health experts do. So it is alarming that the Court second-guesses the judgments of expert officials, and displaces their conclusions with its own. In the worst public health crisis in a century, this foray into armchair epidemiology cannot end well. I fervently hope that the Court’s intervention will not worsen the Nation's COVID crisis. But if this decision causes suffering, we will not pay. Our marble halls are now closed to the public, and our life tenure forever insulates us from responsibility for our errors. That would seem good reason to avoid disrupting a State's pan- demic response. But the Court forges ahead regardless, insisting that science-based policy yield to judicial edict. Trumpists say Have we ever seen a President attack and malign the free press like Joe Biden has?? Jim Banks, 6:17 PM – Jan 24,2022, Republican Representative from Indiana, diverting attention from years of Trump calling journalists “enemies of the people” by calling out Biden for being overheard on a hot mic calling Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, to whom he later apologized, a “stupid son of a bitch,” which reminded people of John McCain's on the air response to a question from Doocy: “Why would you say something that stupid? Why would you ask something that dumb? Huh?” © 2022 Kwiple.com
Trust Trust is gained in teaspoons and lost in buckets. Military saying quoted in The New Yorker, January 24, 2022 © 2022 Kwiple.com
