Barack Obama

2008 financial crisis Trump's rise, like Warren's and Sander's, wouldn't have happened without the 2008 financial crisis. They were all part of the political backlash that followed the crisis-like aftershocks from an earthquake. One thing Trump's victory made clear was that the Obama's administration's response was more costly than initially assumed. The decision to forgo what Tim Geithner called “Old Testament justice" and concentrate the government's firepower on recapitalizing disgraced banks might have kept the economy afloat, but it also bred a deep resentment. Trump won because he consciously evoked the disgust people had come to feel toward Wall Street and Washington and made himself into an instrument to strike back. Children To target these young people is wrong – because they have done no wrong. It is self-defeating – because they want to start new businesses, staff or labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. … Kicking them out won't lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone's taxes. or raise anyone's wages. Dysfunction in government The self-styled “Young Guns” [Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Ryan] decided to make the GOP the “Party of No.” The United States was mired in the deepest economic crisis since the Great Depression, yet Republican legislators planned to not  cooperate with the new [Obama] administration. Elections Here's one thing I know: if you have to win a campaign by dividing people, you're not going to be able to govern them. You won't be able to unite them later if that's how you start. Barack Obama © 2017 Kwiple.com
Filibusters The ease of use is what made it such a powerful tool for McConnell. Even Richard Russell could not have organized 137 filibusters in two years, which is the number McConnell deployed against Obama from 2009 through 2010. But under the rules of the modern Senate, doing so was as easy as making a sign-up sheet. All it took was a phone call or an email from a single Republican senator and the threshold on any bill or nomination would shoot up from a majority to a supermajority, effectively granting the minority veto power. And there is nothing the majority can do about it. Adam Jentleson, Kill Switch © 2021 Kwiple.com

Race After my election there was talk of a post-racial America. Such a vision, however well intended, was never realistic. Race remains a potent and often divisive force in our society. Barack Obama © 2017 Kwiple.com
Racial inequality Malcolm X's vision of black politics, centered on putting community issues first, has collapsed under the weight of the Democratic Party's general uneasiness about tackling racial inequality and under the guidance of a race-neutral black president who distances himself from issues and policies targeted at eradicating racial inequality. Racism What I said wasn't racism. It couldn't be because Obama had a white mother, a white grandfather, he went to white schools, and most of what he learned was from whites. Rudy Giuliani, who said to an audience of whites, “I know this is a horriblle thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America. He doesn't love you. And he doesn't love me. He wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.” © 2015 Kwiple.com

Sleepers at the wheel say The rugged individualism that defines America has always been bound by a shared set of values, an enduring sense that we're in this together, that America is not a place where we simply turn away from the sick or turn our backs on the tired, the poor, the huddled masses. It is a place sustained by the idea “I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper.” Barack Obama © 2015 Kwiple.com
State of the union So let me repeat: The combined trends of increased inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe. Snapshot The man is not an asshole, and indeed something of an antiasshole. For many progressives, this is a problem, as we  can see from their objections: he pulls back from using the powers he clearly has; he fails to respond to the opposition, allowing it to define the debate; he is too eager to listen, to understand, so as not to offend, to the point of being dragged away from his convictions by people stubborn in theirs; he makes premptive concessions in approaching the bargaining table and then further concessions down the line; he favors compromised policies that absorb everyone's concerns and that do much less good than they could. In short, progressives wish Obama could behave a lot more like an asshole. Barack Obama portrayed by Aaron James © 2022 Kwiple.com
